Charlie Manuel said in a quiet setting in the sleeves Jayson Werth Phillies dugout at the 13th Combat collection Tuesday.
It was not nerves. It is a building sense of anticipation.
Who will?
Who will win this thing?
It turned out to Werth, who hit three-run home run to left field to beat the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park, 4-1. The Phillies have won 10 games, the longest winning streak since they won 13 in a row, in 1991, their 6 1/2-game lead over the Braves in the National League East.
"I do not think we can click on all cylinders just yet," said Werth. "We are half club, half the shelves where we are. Keep the table for September. I think you will see our best baseball in September and October."
The path is hard to beat. The Phillies have won 14 of last 15 games since they lost to the Braves on July 2. They lead the majors with 95 runs and a 2.15 ERA in that span. The club was 10-0 with a 2.34 ERA. Opponents hit just 206 against them. The bullpen is 4.1, with six saves, nine holds and a 1.77 ERA. Opponents have only 179 bodies of relief against Philadelphia.
They showed that large pitch Tuesday.
Right Hander Phillies Joe Blanton made his first start after the All-Star break. He started Saturday against the Marlins, but the game was postponed to the second round because of rain.
With a gain of 4-1 of the Chicago Cubs, the Philadelphia Phillies are currently in the middle of a game-winning 10.
